HCCS Kindergarten's Tech Page
Welcome to HCCS's technology page designed especially for our Kindergarteners! I'm trying something new this year and will have a page like this for each grade (grades K through 6) where I will post links to the sites that we will use for the 2009-2010 school year. Feedback is much appreciated so if you would like to let me know what you think about this idea, this page, or something else in regards to Technology, please send me an email.
Below you will find links that I have personally chosen and reviewed for our use during this school year. I will add more links as the year progresses. I'm trying to design this page with your average 4-6 year old in mind, when it comes to the ease in navigation on the links (the text is more for the adults to read). We will be using a mixed curriculum this year in order to offer a balanced variety of learning. Everything learned will meet the benchmarks set forth in the Academic Content Standards for Technology developed by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
Technology is a valuable aid that introduces children to a wealth of resources that are otherwise unavailable in the classroom. The skills that they acquire can be of great use to them in the future. Using the internet with kindergarteners teaches them beginning internet navigation skills, basic keyboarding, and simple computer skills, while incorporating classroom curriculum that coordinates with the ODE's set standards. Students will work in word-processing programs to practice writing, editing, design and keyboarding skills. They will type words that rhyme, write letters, and add images. They will type words, sometimes changing the font, the color and the size of the text. They may even become a young author and get to print their very own book. We will make and use maps, learn about animals and go on various educational Webquests. We will be able to go on virtual field trips without even having to leave the actual classroom!
Students will learn to communicate through technology. They will learn early on to identify the parts of a computer and software terms such as menu, file, save and quit. Your child will be able to label the different parts of the computer, such as the monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, speakers and disk drive. Integrated with the traditional school subjects (reading, writing, math, social studies, science and art) the children will learn how technology can help them with what they need to know to communicate their thoughts. Some of these things may seem a bit advanced for kindergarteners but you would be surprised what most children already know about computers at this age. Internet safety is very important at HCCS. I will have quite a few rules that all students must learn to follow. All computers in the computer lab are equipped with a special spam blocker (kinda like a web nanny filter). Children will also learn the classroom rules, our Accptable Use Policy, etc.
